The SWEETS Hotel in Amsterdam transforms historic bridge houses into unique boutique suites. A creative concept that combines architectural history with modern comfort – perfect for travelers seeking something special.

Experience Amsterdam through stylishly decorated hotel rooms spread throughout the city

Since 2018, the founders of Sweetshotel in Amsterdam have been realising a very special concept: a hotel complex spread all over the city. The idea came from the Amsterdam architecture firm Space & Matter. The city was happy to support the use of Amsterdam's bridge houses.

Amsterdam sits on the Ijsselmeer, which has been transformed from a former sea bay into a huge freshwater lake by the construction of a dike. Throughout Amsterdam's history, a network of crossings was created to allow ships to pass through the sea. Bridgekeepers were responsible for these crossings. Since 2012, these manual crossings have been largely automated, and the bridge houses built for this purpose are no longer in use.

These bridge houses were the realisation of an unusual idea by architects Space & Matter. In 2012, they planned to build a hotel distributed throughout the city. In collaboration with the founders of the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy and Hotel The Exchange, Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan, they came up with the concept of restructuring these very bridge houses and turning the whole of Amsterdam into a connected hotel. Another unique feature is that guests can split their stay and experience Amsterdam in several different bridge houses.

Unique brand marketing for hotels

The founders of Sweetshotel have created a new concept of city break for their guests. The extraordinary and stylish way of living right on the water is something they will never forget. In a modern way, Sweetshotel in Amsterdam creates not only an elegant way of travelling, but also a special feature in hotel marketing. The 28 bridge houses are now stylishly furnished. 18 of them have already been completed. As the hotel has neither a reception nor a restaurant on site, the marketing-optimised statement of experiencing the entire city as a service is successful. The small bridge houses are designed for two people and offer privacy right by the sea. They create a unique atmosphere that lends an interesting flair to the whole city.
