Mamula Island in Montenegro combines historic architecture with modern luxury. Discover how this extraordinary hotel concept blends history and hospitality, and the inspiration hoteliers can draw from it.

Hotel opening of a historically protected monument in Montenegro

The historic Lastavica Island, also known as Mamula Island, is located near the border of Croatia and at the entrance to the 30-kilometer-long Boka Kotorska Bay. This region, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is rich in history and considered a valuable cultural monument. The hotel on Lastavica Island is set to open in late summer 2022 after undergoing a complete restoration that honors the fortress' historical roots. As far back as 1853, the bay was utilized by an Austrian general as a fortress for protection against invading forces.Later, the island was transformed into a prison and was used by Italian fascist leader Mussolini for his own purposes. These dark times only came to an end with the end of World War II, as the Nazis also occupied the island as a camp in 1941. After the war, the building was left neglected and at risk of falling into disrepair, forcing the need to find a new purpose for the site due to its historical significance.

Hotel for contemplation and tranquillity

The hotel project is led by Swiss investor Samih Sawiris, a well-known figure in the industry. The project transforms a historically significant site into a new and innovative experience for guests, creating a peaceful oasis. The luxury hotel offers 10 rooms, 16 junior suites, and 6 suites, all with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. Additionally, guests have direct access to nature and cultural heritage through a specially designed memorial. The hotel concept aims to provide a first-class stay that offers both tranquility and access to the rich history of the surrounding area.

A place for encounters as a hotel concept

The rooms and suites are complemented by three exceptional hotel restaurants, three bars, and a comprehensive spa area with multiple pools, a historical memorial, and a private beach on the Adriatic Sea. The creators view the essence of the innovative project as a delicate balance between providing a space for guests to experience pleasure and connecting with nature while also respecting the history of the island. The hotel on Mamula Island offers guests a unique blend of cultural heritage, exploration, and relaxation, making it a one-of-a-kind luxury experience.
