The word follower was shaped mainly by the social media platform Twitter and refers to users that have subscribed to certain content, other users, interests, or companies. On Twitter, each user has their own timeline where specific posts, also called tweets, are being displayed. If a user follows an account, not only will its content be displayed on the user’s timeline, but the user will also be able to contact the account directly. Other social networks like Instagram, Facebook or Flickr are now using the term follower too. The number of an account’s followers is directly related to its reach and coverage. Thus, this number is an important metric in online marketing. Through social media marketing, the number of followers can be increased and then used for marketing purposes. The number of followers also plays an important role when choosing an influencer.
